Service Description

Full 8 WK Cost = $500 or $35/day Scholarships can be available upon request. It is highly encouraged participants attend the full session! The Wild Hive is one of those special programs with proven techniques, and activities which have lit up and inspired kids since…well, since forever. We use the intersection of the town and the wild, as we explore forests, rivers, and unique Durango, together. The activities look like Nature Connection Programming with a big twist: child-centered choice with the overlay of a roving Role Playing Game! On an average day, the participants might need to identify and prepare edible plants or medicines, create a friction fire from locally harvested materials, use their senses to navigate a blindfolded forest maze, weave together cattail to make a mat, work together to cross a field of “lava”, recognize a specific bird by sight or sound, identify an animal’s track or sign, or sit an watch and wait while the forest comes alive around them. These connective activities, where participants connect to each other, to the world around them, and to themselves, are overlaid with an exciting and engaging imaginal game. The whole program is ALSO a Role Playing Game. This means each participant is playing a character of their own creation, complete with a backstory, strengths, weaknesses, quirks, needs, desires, and compulsions. They will be led by Game-Master characters, who help them on their way, engage them in quests and challenges, and also help to hold the boundaries of what is possible and safe to do “in game”. They will also encounter other characters out in the world, wondrous and curious volunteers playing their part, giving quests, having problems that only an intrepid group of rag-tag heroes can solve. That’s us. And along the way, we will be developing hard skills of the naturalist, survival, and local history variety; developing soft skills of group decision making, personal introspection & development through acting and character, joint story-telling, and the delicate art of Not Breaking The Game.
